Boy And His Horse
story behind the piece
In 2017 I volunteered to shoot a project for an education trust in South Africa. We spent a few weeks in the great Karoo capturing student and teacher stories about an underfunded school that helped lower-income and troubled families kids get set on a good path. On days we finished filming early or didn’t have much to film, the kids who lived across the street (and also attended the school) would run over asking us to play soccer, go on 4x4 adventures in the countryside, or go horseback riding with them. This was a moment they were getting ready to embark on an evening horseback ride. I caught one of the kids saddling up his horse. I remember seeing the moment happen, capturing it, and then afterwards, thinking about how the boys sweatshirt matched his horses ropes and how there was this brief delicate moment between a kid and this powerful animal.
